I watched the show last night where Ben Fogle revisited a couple living in British Columbia.
The guy has made a business of taking tourists out into the forests to see bears in the wild, but hunters had been given permits to shoot bears for a mere $88 each. I believe his campaigning has changed the law regarding so well done that man.
Bears tend to be a nuisance animal and that leads to culling, they are dangerous when they are hungry and certainly they see humans as part of their food chain but the number of fatal attacks are rare. I would imagine that the number of bear attacks in the UK are extremely small (zeroish) but that doesn't stop people from culling badgers now does it?
Who says that they are a nuisance animal ?. Not the bears I imagine.
Badgers are killed here because they can carry bovine TB and transmit it to cattle and it is a very contentious subject.
@Moravian Have you had your trash bins ripped apart by a bear? Have you run into one while out on a ride on your bike or on a hike with a troop of boy scouts? Have you had a bear report issued by the authorities with orders to stay indoors? As for badgers, it likely has more to do with the fox hunting set than anything else but we don't have a lot of badgers in Canada or fox hunters for that matter either.
@Surfpirate Fair enough. I was just commenting on the particular situation mentioned on the Ben Fogle show. As I understand it the licences to kill the bears were being handed out freely. The guy who managed to have the killing stopped or at least curtailed made a living from taking people out to see bears in the wild so they can't have been that dangerous.
The killing of badgers has nothing to do with fox hunting or as Oscar Wilde called it "The unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable". Anyway is is banned in the UK now.
It's mostly people from the US coming here & trophy hunting our bears. There has been a huge outcry over this.
I got the impression that it was local hunters hence the really low price.
@Moravian Some are local, but definitely the US hunter loves to come here & ruin things. Locals also know not to eat bear.
If it's hunters from the US , $ 88 is not enough for a nonresident bear permit .
@Besalbub No, it's not. But I think trophy hunting is now banned. I know it was in the works, but am unsure of the status now.
