I would've explained that is not a good idea. Cats can be trained to scratch only where you want. If a declawed cat gets outside it is almost defenseless.

I flat out tell people that declawing cuts off the last joint of each little finger. I then go on to inform them that declawed cats are less likely to use the litter box, more likely to bite, and develop arthritis early because their ability to walk was compromised.

Cats walk on their claws, not their paws. It's comparable to walking on the tips of your fingers. Declawing affects their balance to some degree. I've adopted cats declared and you can see a slight difference in movements and ability. Too bad, it's just not a good thing to do.
