Simply trim the claws blunt with nail clippers. I once saw my old girl extend one claw and use it like a scalpel to eviscerate a lizard with one precise slash.

Here is how to pick up most any cat to avoid injury from claws: grasp hind legs with one hand and front legs with your other hand tight but not too tight to harm their legs together
....only do this for the most necessary moves....Zoe may bite so leather gloves can prevent some puncture teeth wounds....a squirt gun is least aversive to get her to move away from you where you are busy....usually shouting DOWN will get her off surfaces you need cleared
