Easy way to make it stop: "dear gods, what the hell ugly thing is that!" or "wow, I have never seen such a horrid looking creature in my life, is that your spawn?" You usually get some comment about not needing to be rude about it and could have just said no. I think we all have tried to say no, but parents just don't understand. Just like a puppy, you seem to have to rub their noses in it before they understand.
