This article serves as a good example of what non-bigoted people living in rural America have to deal with on a daily basis - this teacher was openly threatened with acts of violence for teaching a class about the impacts of racism. Then the racist parents started threatening her & people started writing, "Die Nigger Die" on the grounds of an ELEMENTARY school. This is the kind of shit I have to deal with EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY LIFE, & a huge part of why I hate human beings. These violent bigots are the majority here - religious leaders here spew hate language to their congregations in church services & this is nothing new - this is what I've had to live with my entire life. This poor teacher will probably end up being killed, or her house burned down for daring to support the non-white children in her school system. [yahoo.com]
Nothing new here. Back in the Sixties a teacher in Iowa did a lesson in her elementary school class called Brown Eyes/Blue Eyes, in which she divided the class into two groups to teach about prejudice. She encountered the same kind of treatment in her rural area, but decades later she was honored as a hero.
I'm sure some of my lessons (I taught in a mostly liberal private school after a brief stint in the public system and 5 years with the catholics) would bring on trouble, especially now-a-days.
