No, you are confusing socialism with communism. There are a number of countries in Europe doing very well with their rather democratic socialism, with a high standard of living, and a pleased population.

@BirdMan1 Democratic Socialism is not Socialism. Name a country that is an example of "Democratic Socialism", and I will show you an Exchange traded fund for that country, which indicates that countries' industry is in private hands. Socialism is when state controls industries, so here in the United States, true Socialism would be taking control away from the executives who generate trillions of dollars per year in profits for their companies, and giving control to Congressmen and other government bureaucrats who have already run up $29,000,000,000,000 in debt. In Germany when the National Socialist German Workers' Party gained control, an unstable lunatic took control of their economy, and we all know how that turned out.

@BD66 I understand that distinction, but what the GQP calls "Socialism," and rants about is not that proper definition of socialism. They rant about things like expanding medicare, expanding social Security, providing a social safety net for people, having some sort of guaranteed income. These things are not about government ownership of the means of production, by far. And, they could easily be paid for by the fed. gov't, if we did not shovel still more money (now an additional 25 Billion) to the military-industrial complex.
