In other species there are thieves, murderers and those who display what we would describe as loose morals, are we alone in feeling guilt?
Other species hold their ranks by killing or maiming and take as a form of survival. And mankind holds no exceptions to this practice. We take pride and celebrate doing these acts to one another. And we do so to ensure our place in the world and we take for our survival. So guilt is only in the eye of the believer and judgement will hold exceptions.
Guilt takes self awareness and the ability to look backwards.
I have seen dogs, and even a kitten, show looks of remorse on their face after a scolding. But I doubt that is the same as guilt. Guilt is something that humans dwell on and introvert on. Animals seem to immediately move on to their next action.
I'm not totally sure about being the only ones to feel guilt. I think we're the only ones with the concept of judgment, even though animals mete out reprisals against their own (and sometimes us too if we're cruel).
Cruelty is an odious thing in any circumstance but especially in animals, they can't got to the police and accuse the perpetraters!
@Austin-Cambridge True enough. We can go to the cops, for what that's worth!
I think some advanced species express guilt...I know dogs show it...(cats? Forgetaboutit!)
But guilt was there long before the #religulous laid their "guilt-trip" morality on us.
Burning bush...I'd love to have been there when the "burning bush" told Moses to "make those (moral) tablets"...
