It is a very heavy year for fruit this Autumn. There are huge clusters of berries on my Rowan, ( Sorbus ) and the apples on my Crab Apple, (Malus) are hanging like ropes.

What do you make with them?

Sometimes I make pies, they are not a type that you can eat raw.

2

Do you ever harvest them for juices or cider?

OldGoat43 Level 9 Sep 17, 2022

One day if I get time, I retire this year.

@Fernapple I thought you said that you already had.

I wasn’t familiar with Rowanberries, so went looking. Found the page interesting, where I learned that you shouldn’t harvest them until after a frost…or several. Just one thing, if you decide to use them to cast a magic spell on me, please make it a pleasant one. [foragerchef.com]

Your most delightful dream shall be made reality.

@Fernapple An old Scottish saying goes: "Rowan tree and red thread, put the Witches to their speed." "Witches" in this case refers to malevolent magic-workers who would do harm to people. The Rowan trees have small red berries on them in the fall. The rowan berry shows a five-pointed star-a pentagram-which is an ancient protection symbol and a modern symbol of Witchcraft. Traditionally, pieces of the rowan tree were carried for protection. Women would wear a neck-lace made of rowan berries strung On red thread. A protective amulet can be made from two Rowan twigs tied into a cross with red wool or thread. Charming.

They droop like drupes

Yes, they look very heavy.

Who is "drupes"? I haven't encountered that person yet.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
