Curious what other people do in the garden at this time of year? Here in the Caribbean for instance - I moved the hose four times during the late afternoon as it's terribly dry, onto bananas, cacao, breadfruit and soursop trees. I also watered the veg patch which is just sweet potato (purple Okinawa) and lettuce, arugula and basil. I found some ripe passionfruits and papayas. I weedwacked 20 minutes with a little battery powered trimmer near the house, tried to rescue some trees from passionfruit and weed vines, and chopped back some tan-tan, a terribly invasive tree that springs up everywhere. (new variety of breadfruit from Samoa still in a pot)
You may be genteely setting out tulip bulbs?
Here in south Louisiana, we had our last light freeze March 5th. A few days later I moved most of my seed starter trays outside and am trying to watch their moisture levels to not let them dry out or drown. I already pruned the roses in early February, but am expecting the last two mailorder bushes this week. I just started this garden last summer, and my yard is dense clay, so I am continuing to build raised beds as fast as I can around my job schedule. I have a long 60 ft bt 5 ft strip at the very front of my yard that I am clearing of grass, the laborious way, breaking up clay clods by hand. Accidentally beheaded a baby brown snake the other day. Oops. I want to mix butterfly and bee friendly annuals and perennials, mostly from seed. That is slow but way more economical. The exveption are the half dozen Mexican Heather and Lantana I just put in last weekend. Planning lots of butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, purple cone flower, yarrow, profusion zinnia, asters, and dill (the last is a host for swallowtails). Planted a native coral honeysuckle last week for the hummingbirds. ?
I live in the desert in Southern California. Here, we plant tulip bulbs in the fall and they will flower the following spring. I am watering everything daily as our rainy season has passed and it is quite dry here. Right now, the strawberries and the peach tree are flowering. The cherry trees will flower in a few weeks. The raspberry brambles I started last year are just starting to grow back. I sprouted the first marijuana seeds of the year this week. I will start more in a couple of weeks. Next week, I will put in tomatoes and peppers. Once we're having warmer overnight temperatures, I will put in melons and cucumbers. I haven't yet decided what else I will grow this year. I might try for eggplant again. I only grow summer crops as our spring is too short for anything that doesn't thrive in hot temperatures.
I'm just watering the onions I planted last week. It's still a little early to do much, yet.
Spent time clearing dead stalks from a myriad of plants and pulling grass and weeds. Spring is a little early here.
debating setting out my plants in the dirt. We normally have one more cold front around April 1, that sometimes drives the temps below the frost level.
