The Acanthus are coming to the end of their flowering now. The one I grow is Acanthus spinosus, it is very spiny, even the flowers are untouchable, but the thistle like leaves are spectacular. It is of course one of the most celebrated of all plants historically, being the source plant for the so called Acanthus leaf decorations, which were so popular with the Greeks and Romans and during the classical revival. That's one good reason for growing it, I love the Romantic associations and the fact that it reminds me of holidays by the Med.

My acanthus flowers are still going strong but the leaves have died back. They keep doing that and it makes them look scruffy.

We lived in a rented house when my kids were little which had these Acanthus growing along the front under the windows. I had no idea what they were then, but the flower looks the same and the thistle like spines on all parts of the plant.
