Iām new to gardening and to this site. Yesterday, I used organic potting soil and started several varieties of veggies from seed.
I am thrilled because right now I see sprouts from the lettuce and peas sections.
Now to be sure the garden plot is ready for spring planting!
Gardening is so full of new things to learn, always.
It makes for a very fulfilling hobby. To keep from discouragement, we need to remember that things go wrong in gardening frequently, but that also helps us learn and improve on gardening craft.
To add to what Glennlab said, if you cover plants to protect from cold, make sure it is not plastic, or if it is, that no plastic touches plant tissues when freezing cold, or the plants will get frost bite.
Spring in Austin can be an elusive thing, as you put out your seedlings have a plan to cover them when the temp is forecast to be below 40 (weather people have a tendency to miss frost warnings). If there are frost warnings anywhere near you plan on covering. The topography in and around Austin can lead to pockets of frost when everything else is fine. Once you figure out the frost patterns for your garden area, you can rest a little. Best of luck.
