Some dogs get hooked on balls like people do drugs. There is a program here where dogs are trained to smell Orca whale scat. The dogs are taken on a boat and when a whale is spotted the boat heads for it and the dog will stick it's nose over the side. When it detects scat it will sit. The whale poop is scooped up and studies. A local professor has shown everything can be determined about the whale from it's scat so it is a non-evasive way to study Orcas which are coming under increased pressure and may become extinct. The dog is rewarded with a ball.
