Well, hand-wavingly - I would think that this is not a purely Muslim phenomenon.
Regardless of who said it, I suspect that the folks who are part of any minority are more concerned with "equal right" than people who are part of the majority and who may not even know people belonging to the minority group.
Not saying it's right or okay, but that it might be "human" nature.
The further removed from the "issue" the less it seems important.
Should we all care more? Maybe.
And I do care, but there is only so much "caring" anyone can "give". I stand up when I can, but I have to work and sleep and eat and pay the bills - these things also occupy my time and energy.
So we each have to pick and choose what we "care" about and how much effort we assign to that caring.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into a simple meme.
