The clothes were removed because the doctor supervising the fight knew that getting stabbed through clothing would force germs into the wound. And in the pre-antibiotic days that could be a death sentence, and this wasn't a fight to the death. [thehistoryblog.com]

@AtheistInNC Clothes being pushed into wounds by swords and bullets are going to be far more germ ridden than the sword or bullet. It was a reasonable precaution.
