I knew there was way more to this than just a 6 year old shooting his teacher.
I hope she bankrupts the District AND their insurance company.
And every adult that did NOTHING for hours, knowing there was a gun in her classroom should be fired, criminally charged and held accountable.
Aside from Uvalde, it's not often we're (the public) given the information regarding epic fails by those who could've acted but didn't. Here we have another example, and it's disturbing and disgusting.
Interesting, wondered what the background to this was. The kid sounds like a disturbed little monster. A cousin had a kid like that, had to be watched EVERY second. I mean, a parent usually was in school with him? Jesus. Reading this I conditionally have more sympathy for his parents, they might not be as negligent as I first thought.
And yes, sounds like the school's response was utterly incompetent. I mean this day and age cops are often called to school over utterly trivial problems ... multiple reports of a student with a gun and the cops weren't called? Sheesh.
The gun supposedly belonged to the mother so if letting your six year old get a hold of it and take it to school is not negligent I don't know what is.
The casual approach to gun ownership and use in the USA is appalling.
This story is disturbing on so many levels.
One would think, in today's world people in charge of kids would pay more attention. They will now.
Couldn't help but notice "On behalf of the family of the child, we continue to pray for Ms. Zwerner " So now the child is the victim??? Still, not word one about the mother.
After moving to this island my late partner took on a position as substitute. Later the Principal job opened up and she applied and actually got it, until things changed. Apparently parents in some school districts have oversized influence. They protested that my partner, a petite woman, could handle HS students. I suspect some parents were on the school board and they helped create the atmosphere that seems to prevail. They certainly had a hand in hiring someone who was clearly not qualified.
I think you may be taking that quote in a way it isn't meant.
That little boys extended family have been very vocal about their shock, horror and support of the teacher and she's accepted their well-wishes /etc., publicly. I believe there's been one conversation, via video chat (if I recall) batten her and the child. I think he was still in mental health screening, at the time. I'll have to revisit that to be sure.
And there's been quite a bit out about the mother. Including her lack of a criminal history or CPS interactions and the fact she bought the gun legally.
If I can dig a little, I think I can upload her interviews with the authorities, there have been several. I know they were used in the CPS/State removal of the child from her care.
Hey. I wanted to forward this on to you before I call it a night.
I think, the more we learn, these parents won't likely be charged and it appears (and my friend has confirmed) these are involved parents, safe and same gun owners, the gun was secured (according to state laws apparently) and the school itself, failed to follow a "plan" that was in olfactory as this child has an acute mental disability (it is not named in this article) that the school was well aware of, and that they did not allow that student to be alone in a classroom (which is common, apparently, in the school in question.) Is a special need school, from what I'm gathering.). The incident happened on a day when his Mother or Father was not in the class with him. Up until then, he had a parent with him at all times (or a hired assistant.)
I don't know. It keeps getting deeper and by all accounts, the school is in big trouble.
@SeaGreenEyez Thanks for the information. Stories are not always so obvious as many of us would assume. I wonder why the parents bought a gun in the first place and whether, in light of what's happened if they will keep it.
@jackjr I wonder that about ALL parents anymore.
@SeaGreenEyez Maybe with all the threats and hate mail they get makes them want to get more guns.
@jackjr A new study came out today. 30% of mass shooters and domestic terrorism are disgruntled rightwingers. (That % goes up, up, up, depending on which type of acts are committed.)
I bring that up because if teachers are getting hate mail or threats (I think that's what you mean)??? It would stand to reason they'd flee the Republican party en masse.
Many of us understand where the hate comes from, but as a parent or teacher, if I were being threatened or sent hate mail, I'd search and find who and why. I would think it would terribly difficult to remain in the middle or the right given there's now over 2 decades of documented realities. And those realities don't speak well of who, exactly, promotes all the ugly shit.
@SeaGreenEyez My comment was about the parents. When people get hate mail and threats their natural tendency is to find ways of protecting themselves. Guns are a natural choice. I (or rather my ghost) posted several times about a study done in Germany about how owning a gun actually changes people. Guns often become a form of drug and once one has one they are more apt to use it for even minor issues. Most of the teachers I've known are not hard conservatives. Liberalism often is about education levels and teachers are more educated than a lot of people. My late partner was a teacher and was heads and shoulders smarter than the average person (and I'm not being prejudiced others have said the same thing).
@jackjr I think, by nature, most academia-centered people, are more intelligent than those not so interested. If nothing else, education, when done without some gross political agenda, does by its nature give opinions, thoughts, ideas, etc., that one may not hear/see in any other setting.
I'm sure, you're well aware of that take. I certainly didn't become a professional student for career advancement. I did it so the world may make some sense to me, at some point.
I need to reenroll. The world still makes no sense to me.
@SeaGreenEyez For some strange reason I adopted learning and knowledge as a life's endeavor. I was, luckily, born with an eclectic mind with a lot of interests. Also, for some strange reason a lot of different experiences have come my way, to further learning and a lust for knowledge.
@jackjr Same for me. I sometimes think some people do not believe any of my life story. I know for certain, it isn't believed by some, that I've bothered to share a little with.
The innate curiosity in me, I thought was "normal" and everyone possessed the same. I don't know when I knew I was profoundly different, but I recall my Mother's Mother taking me to an operetta when I was in the 5th grade. I was instantly hooked. I sought out information. Even all that long ago.
I was just sharing two of my YouTube channels with my Mormon. All I got back was "Interesting."
In some states, a six-year-old cannot be held legally responsible for any criminal act. That said, a six year old using a gun will get locked up, if not old enough for a juvenile facility (jail), a mental institution (I have seen kids as young as almost 3 (still in a diaper) at a mental institution).
The "Infancy Defense" applies to all 50 states in America. It used to be aged 7, now its 6 in most places, up to 8 and in two states, age 9.
You may have seen toddlers in mental institutions (which is sickening to think about) but juvenile offenders are not, by default, sent to those institutions for any length of time.
Most are taken in by the State and fostered. And most of those who've committed a crime, specifically a violent crime, are taken in by experienced fosterers, not the creeps using the system for income.
The child in this incident of already out of mental health screening and is already placed, out of that state, and beginning to learn about life without guns and gun violence, domestic violence, drugs and alcohol and abuse in the home.
The only reason I know this is because I have a paralegal friend with access to all the sealed files in that jurisdiction and we are authorized to share files and placement plans for future cases. Sadly, these cases aren't one-offs. We have 6 kids in their "tender years" in this jurisdiction. And we're a small city. Here, the Infancy Defense applies to those 8 or younger. And here, even for murder, under 17 are in the juvenile systems, as designed.
@SeaGreenEyez I just looked and 25 states have dropped any minimum age for prosecution. A couple states go as high as 12. There are articles on how the conservatives are blowing that away - just one more way to crush the poor and the downtrodden. Force everyone to have babies and then lock them up for prison labor.
@Beowulfsfriend I did see that also. The DAs and Prosecutors, fortunately, are not only allowing the "Infancy Defense" they're in agreement, even the ultra conservatives, that "tender years" is a very real thing. There will be, of course, someone in Florida that'll charge a 5 year old with Capital Murder. Because, of course. (I seriously doubt even the dumbest of jurors would go along with that, but it is America.)
And you're so right about the rightwing.
I just watched some INCEL-looking dude crying about abortion on CSPAN out something. He had a picture of a fully term baby in-utero and a band new baby, underneath it. He was claiming the top picture was a zygote. WTH??? It was in some state legislative body. The women opposing him was wearing a Jesus fish pin on her lapel. I wondered if I'd just entered an alternate universe.
