Just came back from the beach in Wilmington North Carolina. I always enjoyed the cape fear serpentarium there, and after doing some research before my trip, I found out the serpentarium no longer exists. The owner was shot and killed by his bi polar wife. One hour before his death an opportunity presented itself that could have stopped the whole situation. His wife was technically insane at the moment and dialed 911 saying that two men were attacking her. The police showed up and cleared the situation because the husband said his wife was off her meds and was insane. Mental health issues are so often times overlooked. Somehow an insane woman was able to get her hands on one of his guns and use it to murder her husband. I can't understand why gun enthusiasts like himself would not have his weapons fully secured. I really do not think there is any such thing as a responsible gun owner. His wife was found not guilty for reasons of insanity in his death. I wonder if the police officers on the scene mentioned to remove all weapons from the house, or at least secure them. The gun debate will continue to go on, but there is apparently no way to ensure gun owners are properly securing their weapons.gun owners will always see their weapons as a way of protecting themselves, and they will never see having weapons in a house with a mentally unstable family member is unsafe.

I also have a big problem with veterans with PTSD being allowed to have guns. Often their 'sacrifice' negates any rules that would make them ineligible to own a gun.

There are way too many stories like this. For me Sandy Hook will always bring this to mind for me. If only that young man's mother had kept her guns locked up and not given him the code to open the gun safe. She knew he had mental issues.
But I also believe that we have to remember that a lot of the shooters do not have mental health issues that have been diagnosed. That one is hard because I think it is a response that many have to mass killings - you have to be insane to do something like that. I honestly think that many of these shooters are filled with hate and have very poor impulse controls.

This took place about a Year and a half ago . I know of many gun owners here in Wilmington who have had most ( if not all ) of their guns stolen . All act like it can't happen to them . Then you have all kinds of hot guns floating around . It is turning in to sheer madness .

Gun owners such should be held liable for improperly stored guns used in a crime . My guns are in a locked room in a locked safe ammo and magazines in another safe .
