LINK Missing Piece of the World's Oldest Analog Computer Found on Aegean Seabed

Amazing.

The device (Antikythera mechanism) was most probably made in the late 2nd century BC, in Greece, for purpose of predicting astronomical positions and eclipses for the calendar.

Well, apparently no, it's almost certainly not a piece of the mechanism: [smithsonianmag.com]

Things from the deep past continually surface to surprise 'modern' humans.

@Jetty I was stationed at a base in Northern Turkey (Sinop). It was on the Black Sea. Many amazing discoveries have been made in this region due to a massive sea level rise which covered a freshwater sea with salt water. The duel system has preserved many things from the past. This was just another of many remarkable finds in the region. Still love to see more discoveries from Turkey.

I was wondering what they would turn up with the new dig. Yes, the item that proves beyond any doubt that there was a large body of now lost scientific/technical knowledge in the classical era. Hopefully others will turn up as we get the ability to locate and excavate ships lost in deep waters, safe from looters.
