UU World magazine screwed up. Here are some things to read about what went wrong and the resultant damage. This is so maddening and sad, and it’s bigger than a horrible article. We must do better as religious progressives. It’s not ethical to say we are welcoming and then get it wrong time and again. [transuu.org]

I agree the article could or should have been better, but I also wonder if need some common sense. The author is coming from a place of good. They didn’t do everything right, but they weren’t being a rude or ignorant. And kudos, for the editors apology. And frankly, those ugly, heartbreaking stats should be in there. How else will people know? I think it would have been better to have Sydney, Clair, and Anydt write their respective sections.

One thing I’m not clear about is if the mother knew Sydney as male. If so, misgendering is almost certain happen. I don’t believe the mother is intentionally misgendering Sydney - she wasn’t trying to be a rude or disrespectful. At the start of a transition it is very affirming to be gendered properly, unfortunately it takers a while for everyone to get it right. This an opportunity to discuss feelings - was the mother embarrassed or ashamed that she misgendered Sydney? Then she should say so. Sydney should discuss how the misgendering makes her feel and they should come up with plan on what to do it it happens again. A discussion like that would have helped the article.

It is NOT cool to ask a random stranger if they had surgery, will have surgery, if they’re on hormones, or will be. However, I don’t think it is totally inappropriate for close family or friends to ask. They want to know and understand what’s going on with their loved one, but it is a delicate discussion. Trans people need to understand they are mostly going to have to have a conversation about surgery, hormones, what’s scheduled to happen next, and future plans; they also should be the ones to initiate the conversation.

I’m sorry but LOL at grandma - vegetarian or vegan? And totally missing the boat on they.
