. I am so lucky in having 2 radio stations that are special. One is NPR (NWPB) and the other is CBC2 (Canadian Broadcasting). On a recent program by a former opera singer, Ben Heppner, he was talking about time 4/4, 3 /4 and so one. He mentioned one timing 3/5 (I think) that no one wanted to play, that is, until a sax play named Dave Brubeck came along and made one piece of music the most recognizable piece in the whole jazz world. See if you recognize this piece.

I knew to what you must be referring as I read your intro. Yes, so recognisable.

Take Five is in 5/4 time....and it’s one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of jazz music.

What I like about the show is that they sometimes veer away from classical to make a point.

What Hugh Heppner said was that no music publisher wanted anything to do with this time until one Sax player proved they were wrong in their judgement. Watching the documentary on Frank Sinatra there are also times he broke the traditional way of thinking.

@JackPedigo Yes...the music publishers and record companies were only thinking about what was going to sell and make a return on their investment. They were looking for guaranteed music sales, anything new, out of the ordinary, or innovative was too risky until it was proven that the public would take to it. Frank Sinatra had a unique way of using timing, it almost felt that he was going to miss his entry, so late was he, but that became his trademark way of singing. Sounds like you’ve found a really interesting music station.

@Marionville I get 3 stations and the main one, KING, has a lot of good things like music ID and high fidelity sound (here it comes and goes and one can really hear the difference) but the music is often boring. The other two are only part time classical but they have better selections and often talk about the pieces being played.
The Frank Sinatra is more interesting than I would have thought. It seems the Mafia connection was done by the muckraker tabloids.

@JackPedigo That’s not surprising....I never paid any attention to the stories anyway.
