As I’ve just stated in Traditional and Folk group, yesterday’s @FrayedBear post of the Australian Tatar artiste got me looking into the Tatar background and ethnicity, and found amongst other information that one of my favourite operatic sopranos Aida Garifullina is an ethnic Volga Tatar from the city of Kazan, capital of Tatarstan. Here she sings at the opening ceremony for the 2013 Summer Universiade which was held in her home city.
Lol, she'd go down well at the Boite, Melbourne not too sure about Paddy's Bar!
What is she actually singing?
If she is a favourite why did it take a while to associate her with her ethnicity? I mean Kiri is immediately associated with Maori & NZ., Sutherland with Australia, Brel with Belgium, Dietrich with Germany!
I knew she was Russian and that’s usually how she’s billed. I never looked into her actual ethnicity before, at least not consciously. I think I did realise she was a Tatar because of her looks, but never gave any significance to that.
@Marionville Zulya is rightly proud of her ethnicity & has unfailingly promoted it in the face of extreme sterility if not hostility.
@FrayedBear Yes...as exiles often do. Maybe if she still lived in her homeland she wouldn’t feel she had to.
@Marionville they are as you said a nomadic people. For such home is where the head is and I suspect that many of her songs have their origins hundreds of years ago and from places & incidents spread across the Euro-Asian plains & mountains.
@Marionville Tommy Darkie's son took back to the Western Islands (Lewis) many folk tunes that had been lost when he returned about 30 years ago.
