Today I’m posting a traditional Scottish ballad which was written by Paisley weaver Robert Tannahill , a younger contemporary of Robert Burns. It’s being performed by Dutch Celtic band Rapalje using Scottish traditional period instruments and costume ..Are Ye Sleeping Maggie?

Robert Tanahill died 1810. The mouth organ was invented by a 16 year old German in 1822 or thereabouts.

An interesting performance.

I didn’t say the period instruments were necessarily contemporaneous to the piece!

@Marionville "Rapalje using Scottish traditional period instruments and costume" if not contemporaneous to the tune why mention it?

@FrayedBear Because my dear Richard...I was describing this particular band and the normal mode in which they perform on stage in traditional period apparel and their use of antique instruments rather than modern ones.

@Marionville now you are following the lyrics of "there's a hole in the bucket dear Liza"!

It was around 1980 that I first heard this sung by Tannahill Weavers. The mouthorgan seems odd though it works. The Irish Bouzouki is a relatively new instrument.

@FrayedBear I know the Tannahill Weavers sang this...they named themselves after its author after all! I just wanted to post an interesting version by the Dutch outfit.
