1967 has gone down in history as “The Summer of Love” and of course San Francisco will forever be the place associated with it…but just a bit further south in California, in Monterey, there was a Festival in June of that year too and it has gone down in history as memorable for this epic performance by master of the Indian sitar Ravi Shankar with Alla Rakha on tabla and Kamala Charkravarty on tanpura…..evidenced by the long standing ovation!
I was 20 at the time and very heavily into Pink Floyd. Dressed in English Flower Power. Thanks for posting.
I think the Sitar is a wonderful instrument, it is easy to go into a sort of trance while listening. I would never have known that most of this song was improvised.
No I didn’t know it either…
@Marionville Clever of the tabla and tanpura responding to rthym changes.
@rogerbenham I think these three Indian musicians played and improvised together constantly…the other two were adept at closely following and adapting to Shankar’s improvisations, almost instinctively.
