here is another song by indigenous Australian Geoffrey Gurrumul, titled Wiyathul. I especially enjoy the other string instruments accompanying him on this one

I do like him a lot...he’s got a beautiful voice!

@Allamanda Yes...I discussed this with someone a few days ago...! I don’t think we necessarily need to understand the words of a song (when listening to one sung in a foreign language) to be moved by it, emotionally if it speaks to you then it’s immaterial what the lyrics are. I have made this point before..and it applies equally to religious music, when singing words that are understood but we have no connection with. It’s always really about the music, and the lyrics are only secondary in that case too. Which is not to say that some songs have words which we do understand and find profoundly moving.

@Marionville I agree up to a point. The exceptions are people like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and many other singer/songwriters.

@Red_Cat You mean there are some songs in which the lyrics are so intrinsic to the song that we lose something when we can’t hear them. Yes...I agree that is true when speaking of certain songs, usually in the protest and folk-music genre, because the music is actually secondary, and sometimes not even all that melodic. That is because they are really a narration set to music, the music is just the medium used to carry the story or poetry.

@Marionville I think that, in the case of Joni Mitchell both words and music are inextricably linked, and they are considered worth covering by others. Whilst each element could exist and stand on its own merits, once heard together in the unit of the song there would seem (to me at least) little point in separating them. In popular culture there are numerous examples, but please don't ask me for a list! I would only mention one for the time being: Paul McCartney, to illustrate my point.

I don't understand his guitar chords at all or how he can use his right hand to press down with such long finger nails. Were he playing right handed his super long nails would be great for flamenco. I think most of the actual guitar work we hear is being done by the guy on the left.
Very pleasant gentle music. Could easily be very sad. Don't know.
