Paying the land with comics journalist Joe Sacco
Chris Hedges talks to comics journalist Joe Sacco about his new book, ‘Paying the Land’. In the book Sacco travels to the frozen Canadian Northwest Territories to reveal the Dene people in conflict over the costs and benefits of the resource extraction industry and development.
The Dene have lived in the vast Mackenzie River Valley since time immemorial, by their account. To the Dene, the land owns them, not the other way around, and it is central to their livelihood and very way of being.
Within this discussion you'll find the reverberating results of capitalism that comes from forced colonialism in Canada. Mirroring that in which the US Native American's face today. High alcoholism, drug use, and a loss of community awareness from ancient practices and survival. The effects residential schools had on children basically kidnapped. The up and down swings of these communities within forced insemination into the failed labor practice of an erosive nature of the fossil fuel industry and resource extraction on their land and economy.
