You might remember Bin Laden? That's that guy supposedly responsible for the 9/11 attacks from a cave in Afghanistan. Reason 1. The Taliban who also wanted him and his terrorist group out of Afghanistan offered to hunt him down and turn him over to the US. Work with the US. Somewhere in between this Bush ordered the troops out of Tora Bora and let Bin Laden escape into Pakistan. The Taliban became reason 2 as we turned the war effort onto them.
Personally I've always stated that the day after Bush let Bin Laden go was the day the troops should have packed up and came home. But I'm just a dumb fuck truck driver who doesn't have a collage degree to know how intelligently the past 19 years have been conducted.
Your conjecture is correct though. But it has been found that Afghanistan also has a wealth in other resources too. Plants that provide 94% of the worlds opium supply. And it's been fairly recently discovered Afghanistan has a fortune in mining aspects. [en.wikipedia.org]
