While the public and media are vociferously debating the relative merits of some non-issue, real policy is being legislated behind closed doors. It's a tried and true technique that effectively limits participatory democracy. Moreover, we don't vote for those in positions of corporate power. These private tyrannies are able to do things under the radar, wheras the government might get called out.
