When I go to the grocery to buy food, all I see around me is cruelty. Many processed products contain milk or a derivative of milk and it can be so time consuming looking through labels to be sure that the product is vegan.

Does it mean that we can't survive without stealing milk from nursing cows? With all our agricultural advancement and innovation, we still have to steal milk meant for calves. When I was a kid I used to think that these milk and its derivatives were synthesized somehow in the lab, I didn't really know that they were all stolen from nursing cows. It can be depressing to think about how much cruelty is prevalent in the food chain both in human society and animal kingdom. We can definitely do better than this

I guess I am lucky in that I developed a reaction to dairy while in the military. Sometimes issues as yours (and those of us that are paying attention) may be a way to motivate us to look for options. There are lots of plant based milks out there and one from Silk [godairyfree.org] has been my main source of dairy. It is thicker than other plant based milks and has more protein and calcium.

I understand. I see the animals in their short miserable lives when I walk through a supermarket. Clothing stores selling leather, wool, fur too. It is the sick reality. Cruelty cruelty everywhere. Home is my only sanctuary.

Yes, it is all around us but, unfortunately we cannot escape it.

Years ago some of us were touring a bird sanctuary in Washington (State). We heard lots of amazing stories some of which I remember. The guy who owned the sanctuary told us he liked to go for walks after sunset. He would walk along a trail but always got a feeling something was going on around him. One night he took 2 flashlights and when he got this feeling he crossed his arms and turned on the flashlights. Sure enough he saw his feet were stirring up all sorts of animals (mostly insects) and he witnessed some predators going after the prey that had moved.

Since becoming vegetarian/vegan I have become more aware of our impact on other creatures. This helps me view the world differently than before and maintain and improve my lifestyle.

I have to do what I can and to not think about what others aren't. Anything else would be unbearably sad.
