I am always on the lookout for whole meals that do not need to be refrigerated. I might not be looking in the right place, but I am finding them surprisingly to find. It's possible that I am being too picky, because I don't want the equivalent of a protein bar or peanut butter sandwich. I want delicious, flavorful food that can sit out for at least a day or two. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I love the kind bars, if I have to leave out of the house. I love my home made trail mix with nuts and berries.
Whole natural fruits, nuts, and vegetables. When I'm out for the day, or even a couple days, I take apples, bananas, shelled nuts, cherry tomatoes, carrots, broccoli stalks, tangerines and such. Mostly raw stuff that can be easily eaten while driving, without utensils or mess. I DO find those to be delicious and flavorful, but it may be an acquired taste. I personally tend to avoid processed foods.
I'm trying to think hard on this. What exactly the reason for these meals? Camping, travel, office/work? Whole meals might be difficult. But may be a combination of different things? Whole fruits or dehydrated fruits. Trail mix with dried fruits and nuts. Kale/carrot chips. Vegan cookies and fancy breads. Cereal mix that you can just add warm water to. I think they even have vegan jerky. That said, I've been known to leave rice and pasta (cooked) and veggies (cooked) out of the fridge for a couple of days, in a cooler place.
Travel and work, mostly. I don't like having to worry about whether the cooler got too warm, or trying to find a microwave while out and about.
@CraeftSmith That could be pretty tough. I usually just bring protein or nutrition bars. Most other things you either need to keep cool or be able to heat up.
@graceylou yeah, that's what I have found. Oh well. It was worth a shot. I guess if I ever do come up with a list, I'll know I can publish a cookbook haha
