Socialist vs. Socialism?
jlynn37 comments on Jun 22, 2018:
I believe there are different applications of socialism as well as capitalism. It would just take working out the compromises to make it work for everyone's benefit, but that most likely will never happen. Selfish human nature, power, greed always prevails.

@Prescott Yes I agree. We in most western countries promote individualism which is all about self-interest. Other places like China and Japan have a more collective approach, where they put family or community first. I like that

RoslynMadrid comments on May 5, 2018:
I remember an Ottawa bylaw that forbade public display of 'any disgusting object'. There are some things that are best left covered up.
MsDemeanour replies on Jun 9, 2018:
@snytiger6 I don't find anything aesthetically pleasing about an old saggy or fat body (and I have one). This is not to say people shouldn't be naked at say the beach where the context is appropriate. Young fit people and children can look beautiful naked. Just look at all the art work dedicated to the naked form. When my boys were little, I thought them beautiful naked. But if I had thought that someone was sexually aroused by the sight of my naked sons, I would be revolted. As a parent I would want to protect my kids from the eyes of perverts so for this reason I'm not comfortable about kids (who aren't able to give legal consent) coerced into public nudity.

@WhatsInAName . Positive reinforcement is of course the best way to shape behaviour. If kids only get noticed if they 'nag' 'cry' 'misbehave'; that's what they will do. They want parental or teacher to engage with them. The trick is to catch them doing something good and praise them for it.

@BettyColeman But doesn't it concern you the damage that religion has done and continues to do through out the world. We could talk about the crusades, the inquisition, missionaries who tried their best to destroy local culture, the oppression and subjugation of women. The method to control the masses by ' accepting their lot in life because it is gods will'. And frankly if I belonged to a tennis club with as much pedophilia as the christian churches have been accused of, I would distance myself from that club pretty damn quick. Accepting what people believe is a cop out. They should be challenged. And we need to fight to keep separation of church and state. So maintain the rage!

I have to go with the first two in combination. MsDemeanour replies on May 7, 2018:
I agree. I was going to say morality is intrinsic to evolution. We survived as a pack animal and as such learned to treat others as we wished to be treated. And I subscribe to the Affirmations of Humanism too. What a shallow life is one where values are not held. As Socrates said "The unexamined life is not worth living"
Incest: Immoral or Moral?
ladyprof70 comments on May 4, 2018:

This of course, assumed there would be -- and even encouraged offspring. It is really only very recently that fertility could be sufficiently ...
MsDemeanour replies on May 7, 2018:
actually there is often a great deal of trauma involved in sibling relations. Anyone who has grown up with brothers and sisters knows all to well the power differentiation and coercion of a sibling just two yrs senior, let alone 5 yrs. There are other biological indications that incest is not intended in the evolutionary process. Did you know a girl is likely to defer onset of her period if she lives with her father. On the other hand if she lives with a stepfather she is likely to start her periods early (a potential genetically compatible mate)

MsDemeanour comments on May 5, 2018:
There's enough scientific evidence to support the notion that it is possible for the universe to come about without a god. We can't disprove a god but if you're 95% sure there is no god, why not just round up?
MsDemeanour replies on May 5, 2018:
@gsiamne I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't mean 95% of the population. I just meant if one is 95% sure within themselves. As for the scientific evidence, there is plenty of that.

This points to one of the greatest dangers of religion. I know a Mormon Elder that has like 18 kids from his 25 year marriage. He didn't like me anymore when I asked him if he had had that talk with his wife. "What talk?" he asked. The talk where you explain that it's a vagina, not a clown car.

Just thinking that just as most Australians don't take their religions to extremes, compared say to the US, secular minded Australians likewise aren't so animated in their secularism to be part of formal organisations or be activists. I guess it cuts both ways.
MsDemeanour replies on May 4, 2018:

MsDemeanour replies on May 1, 2018:
@JAEMPRESS My scientific explanation for how racism (or wariness of difference) came about IS totally inadequate for today's prejudice, you're right. As a woman having experienced sexism, I can only glimpse what black people go through on a daily basis. Our Australian Aboriginals have the same deal where they are over represented in jails, lack education, increased health issues and have a life expectancy ten yrs less than white people. It's an appalling situation. I believe racism is a choice today, regardless of how you were brought up, people, all people should make a stand for injustice and it starts with every individual. People need to question their values.

@Kaitaki It is more an evolutionary behaviour that kept us alive for millions of years. We had to make snap judgements whether someone was of our clan. Did they look like us or were they a threat. Today we no er have to make those snap judgments so if a racist thought or fear pops in our mind, we can reject it because it is no er relevant today
