Rock around the clock was an early pop song of the Rock ‘n’ Roll era. It was written by Max Freedman and Jimmy Myers (who wrote under the pseudonym Jimmy de Knight ) and was first recorded in 1952 by an Italian-American band called Sonny Dae and his Knights. It was subsequently recorded by Bill Haley and his Comets with moderate success, as the “B” side of a 1954 single, featuring Thirteen Women (and Only One Man in Town). It was not until Rock Around The Clock was used for the title soundtrack of the 1955 film, Blackboard Jungle, (which launched the career of Sidney Poitier, incidentally) that it rose to success, eventually topping music charts on both sides of the Atlantic in 1956.

I remember how horrified my parents were at Elvis's gyrations. I saw a special on Elvis a few weeks ago and it was really so tame. But for white folks I think it was the first direct connection between sex and music.

Now I think it's a cool relic... I would have thought differently back then...????

I laughed its funny My brother was a rock-n-roller at art college in the fifties when I think back ot it it was all so innocent.

Now it is played in some church's. Don't forget "Jesus Christ Superstar" (not). I especially like the part where everyone wants him to touch and heal them and it becomes overwhelming. Funny, how reality is what it is even for the supposed omnipotent.
