Are there any manners left in the world today? I had two art exhibitions last week and I invited a very casual acquaintance to attend if he was available. He text me back saying that he would love to come. Turned out to be a "no show." I did this as a friendly gesture---nothing more. Wouldn't a "sorry I can't make it (busy/sick/hate art anyway) be a polite thing or are people just rude nowadays?

Yes, he produces a monthly musical venue in the town that I live. Our one-to-one conversations have been pleasant. I thought that he could come and expand his audience by networking on a scene where he could likely get new people. Plus, I felt it was a friendly gesture.
It's much easier to be rude than anticipate how someone will feel.

To your initial question, minimal, in the case of your "casual friend", forgetfulness could be the reason... or "just rude". (trump)
I believe some people (mostly men?) think courtesy a sign of weakness... (???) (trump)
The "Me Too" phenomena may have an effect (recent) on men showing outward signs of manners, but you're you are correct, rude seems more common. (trump)
