Who else remembers being told to 'turn off that idiot box and go outside and play with your friends, be back by the time the street lights come on and don't make me have to call you in'? Why did this go out of fashion? I almost never see kids playing outside anymore without adult supervision. The last thing we wanted when I was a kid was an adult hovering around us, how would we manage to do anything that was fun. Nobody died, a few broken bones and some bloody noses but that's all.

People bought into urban legends as reality. Stranger danger is a rather ridiculous idea. Overwhelmingly, children are hurt by their parents or people their parents trust to take care of them.

How fucking tragic is that? Worse is that it is true and born out by all the evidence. People are worried about some mystery creep in a white van, like something out of Scooby Doo, meanwhile the kids are getting abused by the baby sitter or her boyfriend.

I was told to stay outside until dark, rain, hail, or it was my turn to wash dishes.

I had to wash the dishes first and then I could go back outside. There were always chores around the house that all of us kids were assigned but TV was usually rationed as it was seen to be a bad influence. I think chores were a good thing and taught us responsibility, fresh air and exercise were also good for us and limiting exposure to the idiot box was ahead of it's time. I own a TV but I haven't had Cable for decades, the stuff they put on the box is mind numbing.

We were allowed Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, 2 hours of cartoons Saturday morning, and 2 hours of PBS Saturday night. The only thing I miss about tv is having a place to put things on top of.

Child predators. It's a real thing. I don't know if we just know more now with news as it is or if it acually happens more often. I can tell you then during my son's first birthday party in 1984, a girl living the next block over was stolen from her fenced and gated backyard.

When he was in 3rd grade there was a news alert for a 8 year old who's bike was found at the roadside but she was missing, to this day she has never been found.

Children disappear everyday.

The International Labour Organization estimated in September that 40.3 million people were held in modern slavery on any given day in 2016. The ILO reported that 25 percent of those human trafficking victims were children.

The majority of victims — 24.9 million people — were held in forced labor. And 15.4 million were forced into marriage.

An estimated 4.8 million people, mainly women and children, were trafficked in the commercial sex trade in 2016. More than 1 million children are victims of commercial sexual exploitation each year.

The ILO reports that women and girls are disproportionately harmed by forced labor and sex trafficking.

Has the new trend of Hover Parenting helped curb the number of abductions or are we all just living in greater fear? As a kid we all knew who the weirdos were and we all stuck together in defense against them, we also knew all of the adults on our street and knew we could go to them at any time for protection. I wonder if people would even open their door to a child in need today.

Hover parenting is.has ruined a generation. I don't have an answer either way, I just see that's what is happening. But no, I don't think kids know the weirdos, they look so normal, like, priests you know?
