My best friend passed away two years ago this past April. Her husband told me that she had burns over 90% of her body, no one knows how it happened. They were planning to go to an event her family was having that day, when he went in her room, (he was an OTR truck driver and they slept in separate rooms when he was home), to see if she was up, he found her on her bed, burned from head to toe, still alive. The only burns spots in the room were where she walked across the carpet, where she touched the basin of her bathroom sink, and where her zippo landed on the floor beside her bed. She had routines and one of them was always applying baby oil after her shower. There is evidence that she went to her sink, then got into her shower to put out the fire, then made it to her bed. The medical report says that she died from inhaling fire into her lungs which was why she didn't make any noise. The only conclusion I can come to, sanely, is that she lit a cigarette too soon after applying the oil and it caught her hands on fire, then spread. Her death has been under investigation for two years and they are no closer to a determination than they were the day it happened. There are family members that believe her husband had something to do with it, but she was still alive when he called 911 and his mother. She was still alive when they all got to his home. If he wanted her dead, he would not have left her alive to talk to police or, possibly, recover. I have a suspicion that her drug addicted daughter, (who had left the house sometime in the morning with her creep boyfriend, who stole her dad's wallet), may have been involved but I hate to think that way.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I do not believe in spontaneous combustion. I have been told baby oil is highly flammable. I wish they would just come to a conclusion and ease her family's minds.

I loved her, she was the sister of my heart. I miss her every day

Sorry for you loss.
Baby oil is flammable at high temperature. It is not very volatile. It is combustible if lit with a flame. I suspect that your friend filled her zippo, had lighter fluid on her hands which mixed with the baby oil. When she lite a cigarette, her hand caught on fire which spread all over her body (and clothing).
(this is only a hunch)

@SouthernHell not really because the baby oil would have simultaneously reduced the volatility of the on the lighter fluid while the lighter fluid making the baby oil more volatile.

I do not believe in spontaneous combustion. I also do not believe that anyone would voluntarily do this to themselves. The possibility of murder should be thoroughly investigated.

Sounds plausible, especially if there were no other injuries to her or signs of any struggle. If she was being murdered by someone, there would be some sort of signs, I would think. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. Friends are few and far between. Flammability of baby oil depends upon a few factors. Application in an enclosed area. Applied as a mist can both bring the flashpoint down. Again so sorry 😟

@SouthernHell that would seem to be the most probable explanation to me.

I am so sorry to hear such a sad story about your friend! That kind of loss, takes time to get passed. I did not know that Baby oil, was flammable? In my younger days I used it in my bath and sometimes when sunning! I stopped, as i believe it is not all that great! It possibly could be one of those mysteries that happens from time to time, that the answer will never be known. I hope that you find an answer that helps you...whatever that is! Your friend will always be your friend in your heart!

I'm so sorry! Nothing can replace a close woman friend...not ever. Like most others, I'm wondering why nobody's opened an investigation into this.

@SouthernHell GOOD! Needs to happen! Hoping for the best!

If you know what brand it was you could find out if it was flammable . Your theory sounds logical so why havent the authorities looked into it ?

Not sure what to say. Looked up flammability of baby oil and it can catch on fire. Disturbing story. Wonder if any of this will be resolved.
