Agnostics are intelligent people based on what I've observed on this site. I wonder how we compare to religious folks as far as intelligence?
Well as they need a manual to explain to them how to get through life! I THINK THAT SAY'S IT ALL REALLY!
Don't underestimate. Don't overestimate.
Since the Dark Ages (or before?) the best education comes from the religious orders.
In fact the church was the place to send your child to be educated.
Now if you are talking about enlightenment that is different all together,
BTW, I have run across more then a few Agnostic ass hats of the lower IQ range.
The short answer is, you have to be intelligent to become agnostic/atheist, but being intelligent doesn't mean you're not religious; I remember reading some study that said how questioning authority is a value mostly endorsed by smarter people. So, you could say dumb people have no choice but to be religious, while smarter people can choose between being religious or not.
Intelligence is definitely not a prerequisite for agnosticism or atheism. Source: I have an atheist cousin who is dumber than shit. We’re talking dumb enough that he fell for the Nigerian Prince scam years ago, and a similar email scam just last year. I have a couple other acquaintances who carry glue sticks for snack time, but somehow managed to figure out that Jeebus is a farce.
My guess is they found an atheist who talks as smoothly as a televangelist, who used big words and sounded smart, so they must be right.
@FutureFicus Well, if you become atheist because you follow an authority figure... Well, I find that strange, but I can understand it's quite possible.
Ugh, that makes me sad. I was holding out some hope for the dummies.....alas, no hope....
I don't think intelligence has anything to do with it. I've seen people that span the entire spectrum from both categories. Even intelligent people can hold to wrong-headed ideas, it doesn't make them stupid. I'm reasonably intelligent, but I've held many bad ideas over the years and I just didn't realize it.
And realizing the wrongness of the god proposition doesn't make you smart. I've first hand experience with that.
See that is the confusing thing to me. I know some wonderful otherwise intelligent people who are god followers. Just can't figure it out. ?
I totally agree. I also have some great friends that are theists. some are not just great people, but very accepting of my non beliefs, we simply just never discuss the topic religion, and talk about other things. The one thing we have in common is that we like to help people in need. A few I've made friends with I've met volentering at a homeless shelter.
