For those with extremely devout religious relatives/family members who adamantly believe you will go to hell if you do not repent: How do you interact with them? How do you respond to the annoying comments such as “I’ll pray for you”?

My sister is super religious, but fortunately she won't talk to me anymore because I win every debate with her.

Being a family is not a blank check. If they cannot accept these differences in beliefs, then they do not accept you as a member of their family.

I don't treat them as god-botherers to be handled in some special god-botherer fashion. I treat them like any other garden-variety asshat. may be their excuse for being an asshat, but that's irrelevant. Toxic people quickly encounter my strong and very clear personal boundaries. Religious people who are toxic (and yes there ARE religious people who aren't asshats) are no exception.

Tell them that yes, you can't wait to die, and go to a magical flying city made of gold and gems and jasper, because thats what youve been into all along. Tell that youve been good, so its cool, you can get in.

Hi, Ludentium, and welcome to the website,

It's simple; only look at them, smile, and respond to your relatives ONLY if they are speaking about neutral subjects and being friendly and kind.

The moment they start talking religion or begin to berate you, become vague and distant, look distracted, murmuring, "Um-hum" in a patronizing way, look at your watch, then say something about being somewhere and LEAVE. And don't return for a long time-hours, days, weeks, if needed.

it only took three visits to train my parents to stop attacking my children.

By the say, you earn website points, and help other members get to know you better, when you write an informational profile that includes your hobbies and interests, and answer all the profile questions, since that's the first place many people look when they see a new member.

Also, the website uses your profile to find member matches, so the more details you include, the better the match.

Then you make comments and write your own posts to earn more points and privileges; for instance, at level two you can private email people. You get different perks with each level, and when you reach level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt.

I've been lucky, I was never a believer, my parents were never religious. but as I have grown I've made some great friends that were believers. we get along just fine. I don't give them shit about their beliefs, and do the same to me.

My oldest brother is a holy roller since his 2nd wife. It's been 10 years or so. I don't know, he came for a visit last year, I had no idea what to do. Lots of uncomfortable silence. Only so much one can talk about their dogs or the weather in Florida. At least it wasn't like prior times spent where he did feel the need to "save my soul" "pray for me" I would just tell him if it made him feel better pray away, but do it for himself not me. Yeah we don't really even exchange cards or anything.

One of my cousins asked me, quite earnestly: where are you going to spend Eternity?
My answer: same place as you.

I don’t fight with them unless they are nasty about it. If they want to pray, knock yourself out, I say. It has no effect on me.

I've had many questions about if I was afraid to go to hell. If they really get on my nerves I just say but that's where my best friends and most interesting people are going!

The classic meme reply to that is: I rented a bus, in case any of you f*ckers need a ride. ?

@CarolinaGirl60 Well, there's a highway to hell but only a stairway to heaven (at least in rock n roll) so that should show be a good indicator of the expected traffic.

Depends on the situation, but I always try to be as respectful as possible because I feel that if I get mad at them and argumentative it is feeding into their lack of understanding. At the end of the day, I know who I am and I know I have tried to be a desent person without a religion telling me to do so. Let 'em pray, it is not hurting me one bit.

I straight up told my family that I choose not to associate with anyone who tries to shove their religion down my throat. My parents didn’t buy it, and kept pushing, so I ignored their calls, texts, etc. Eventually, they got the point (sort of). My mom told my siblings that she had prayed about it, and had faith that the lord would send someone to bring me back to the fold, but that she’d been inspired that she needed to let him do it in his own way.
Close enough. I talk to her occasionally now.

If they're sincere, I freely discuss my lack of belief and the reasons behind it. I point out things like how they themselves reject the existence of thousands of other gods that humanity worships - and how I use the same approach towards their god for (probably) the same reasons.

If they continue to push after that, or if they drop a line like "I'll pray for you" even after I've been clear, I have no problem pushing back by telling them "I'll think for you"

Can't go to a place that does not exsists.

Tell them that Jews do not believe in Hell, that Catholicism created the concept. If they do not believe you find a Jewish person to explain it to them. If that does not work take them to a Catholic priest and ask him were the term God came from, how to say god in latin "deus", and were does that derive its linguistic roots...."Zeus" ...

I just tell them that I do not need the prayers but if they wish to pray for me that is up to them! Then I ask them to explain to me how they got the animals from Australia and South America to go on the big sea cruise. And where did Adam and Eve find the wives for their sons. I have yet to get an answer for my questions.lmao
