What Twitler and Herr Sessions are conveniently ignoring in their zealous pursuit of immigration purity is that for decades the US has tacitly invited people to come and work, with or without papers. By failing to (A) ever sanction employers who hire undocumented immigrants, and by never developing a national ID system under which employers could determine the status of prospective employees, and enforcing the existing laws in what at best could be described as a perfunctory manner, in fits and starts or not at all, the US has in effect had a de-facto open-door policy. It's not like we have not had time to get a proper legal framework in place. It has been this way for many many decades. To suddenly decide that people who have put down roots here, who have contributed to the economy and enriched the culture, are merely scum to be scraped off the side of the tub is deeply immoral. It is a game bait-and-switch on a grand scale. I am ashamed for my country.
An underlying majority thought nothing could be done, and to even bring up the topic invited accusations of Racist. Republicans used illegal immigrants to drive down the wage base and break unions; Democrats assumed they’d eventually become democrats…
The problem festered, for decades, until a bold unfiltered political rookie clung to it like none had, and it became the main reason he acquired the presidency (though a whole lotta folks couldn’t admit having voted for him for that reason).
So finally, something’s being done, something serious ..not just bandaid deportations to alleviate criticism (like Obama), but the get-tuff measures necessary to turn things around … especially if this is a one term presidency.
This is a major problem and concern around the world, and ‘ours’ are not refugees of war, they remain a constant flow of economic opportunists taking advantage of the goodness and stupidity of the USA. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, when forced child labor and/ or human ovens are built - let us know.
Totally ashamed of the Herr Trump administration.
