i take my son to museums all the time and always have (he's 8 ) so maybe i'm biased due to experience, but my son learned proper museum etiquette the first time we went to one, and I reinforce his understanding at the start of every visit, even today. I still monitor him at every moment because you can't expect a child to always know what is art or if something is reallllly off limits (like a lego art piece or a tea set on a table, not cordoned off). The mom may not have known it was not to be touched, but as a matter of course, we aren't supposed to let our kid run amok around anything they might break.

If a person is an adult and thinks kids or adults should touch everything in sight maybe they need to visit more places where if "you break it you bought it" and see what happens

As stupid and irresponsible as the parent is, the community center should not have had such a valuable art piece out where children could accidentally break it. Apparently, none of them had heard of "child proofing."

Otherwise, there should have been a warning sign, maybe a velvet rope, and/or a guard.

Parent supervision should be the proper child deterrent. There is no excuse for these kids running around in wild abandon in an art gallery, or anywhere else. There should be consequences for the children and parents when either ignores how people should conduct themselves. I am personally tired of parents that turn a blind eye to their children's behavior, it is despicable.

I didn't childproof my house. I houseproofed my child. The way to teach children is to expose them to the consequences of actions instead of removing possible problems.

I see both sides. I cringe at the parenting. It’s definitely a fail. At the same time i’m Like “Why on Earth was something so expensive sitting with no rope or sign?”

I hope she gets a large portion of that bill just so it shows her what a shitty parent she is
