Why can't I shake the feeling that I'm going to have to flee the US?

Really? I’ve been feeling that way, too.

Hang on! Remember that this nation's seen horrible times in the past and things have recovered. VOTE!

@PalacinkyPDX Every day, I tell people....only a few weeks until November. VOTE! DEMONSTRATE! Give a few dollars to appropriate candidates! If this nation got through the Civil War and the horror that was "Reconstruction," we can beat this horrible GOP, too!

I have some friends who are expats in Costa Rica. I'm flying down next Thursday to vacation and to look at some properties. It's only a 2.5 hour flight from Florida. They have a national healthcare system and the cost of living is much less than the US. I have included a link that has helpful info.

Costa Rica's a beautiful place! Far too small to hold all of us, though.

@LucyLoohoo All of us? Who else want's to go?

@PalacinkyPDX Both countries have interesting pensionado programs.

@kensmile4u I lived in Panama and many of my friends still do...most of the expats are tRUMP supporters...Costa Rica is beautiful...I have a friend who is trying to get all of us to move as a group to his community...have to be of like mind

hmmmm....I don't feel that at all.
But, if I were to become an ex-pat, I'd head to the Caribbean 🙂

It certainly looks pretty grim right now, doesn't it?

The only thing I can hope for, is the Donald Trumps, Steve Bannons, and Stephen Millers of the world have miscalculated in their unscrupulous approach.

I've heard that they are all quite pleased with the political and social angst they've engendered. But as I read in Slate magazine today, "amoral trolling is not good politics".

Because it's moving rapidly to the far right.

Fleeing the US is not as easy as you might think, unless you can get dual citizenship first or have a lot of money.

Yeah, I know I'm pretty much stuck here.

@memorylikeasieve You could ask for political asylum! I'm pretty sure that no explanation would be needed...

It's not as hard as you think. There are many countries that have visas which will allow you to establish permanent residency in as little as 12 months.

I can relate to that feeling of despair.

1

Where would you go? Do you speak a language besides English? Are you considering moving to an English speaking nation?

I guess I'd have to. I realise I'm pretty much stuck here. It's just a feeling in the back of my mind.

It is hard to find a replacement for the USA. @memorylikeasieve

I go with you but cuba and north korea are off the table. Can't get my retirement in those countries. Is not as if we are escaping from paradise.

Starting to feel its Nazi Germany all over again huh? Canada is about to get population surge.

I was thinking about that this morning. What did ordinary German (or Japanese or Italian) people who found their governments' actions unconscionable but couldn't fight do?. Did they flee? Where did they go? My research skills are a bit substandard so I can't find anything.

@memorylikeasieve probably like most things. Those that could afford to get out did . Those that couldn't would resist in whatever way they felt they could

Passport ready to go...but, I don't think it will be necessary...this too shall pass

I agree with you that anyone who is concerned should get their passport as a minimum precaution.

1

would you have to flee? You're white. If you had browner skin, I'd say you have reason to worry. This country is damned toxic for our browner brothers and sisters.

That's as may be, but I don't see it staying at all safe for homosexuals of any colour.

You are probably not the only one.
