Look at the different bibles published since then.... There are at least 50 different bibles running around -- so I agree.

There's an excellent book by Resa Aslan called Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, in which he describes Jesus as a socio-political figure, around whom a movement was created, but not necessarily based on his teachings. In essence, someone seeking to disrupt the status quo, largely surrounded by marginally literate figures, who maintained an oral tradition until they eventually made their way to someone capable of writing down gists of conversations and events, which maybe did or did not happen. According to Aslan, Peter was roundly despised as an excessively hostile, war-mongering zealot who happened to have the most available resources, so could churn out the greatest volume of documents from which the bible could be pieced together. Theoretically, you could have 10 apostles saying Jesus' big message was, "Don't be a douche", but have that message shouted down, as the movement is diverted down a completely different path. To the victor go the spoils.

Even more than just that. They didn't even consult the Codex Vaticans, the bible pieced together at the Council of Nicea for their translations. Four different translators collaborated using six different sources, most of which were in older forms of English or common Latin and came up with a text that is drastically changed from the Codex. The Codex is a real treasure, historically, and can be viewed upon appointment by those who have been invited to the Vatican Library to study. It's stunning that such was available, although politically it might have been a bit awkward seeing as Henry VIII just pissed off everyone in Rome. Anyway, there was a source that has fourth century as close to original texts as we can get, and they didn't even try to use that. Academically, that is a cardinal sin, if you pardon the pun.
