I argued with a few guys for almost three days in a Facebook thread. They were claiming that transgender people were "mentally ill" and I was bringing evidence of the fact that that was not the case.

In the end they ended up using ad-hominem attacks towards me and I decided to give up.

It's hard to understand why people are so hateful and with every such argument I lose more and more faith in humanity.

They are missing something from their gene pool in the smarts department.

If transgender people are mentally ill, then what are hermaphrodites? Are they mentally ill too?

I'd say the transphobes are the ones who have a problem.

Horrible analogy not even remotly close to each other.

@Dbterry

How do you know?

Have you read about hermaphrodites, XXY, intersex or Kleinfelters?

Some hermaphrodites have a clear gender identity, which is sometimes overridden by medical professionals who decide for themselves which way ambiguous genitalia should go. There are direct parallels with transsexualism.

And some transsexuals have abnormal chromosomes.

You didn't lose, because you shouldn't take it personal. You were spreading seeds of information, and while you don't feel the fruit of the seeds, you gave them something to think about, and you may never see whether or not they start to think differently. Just keep spreading seeds! No one, not any of us, changes our minds instantly!

If this person is religious and I'm going to be a jerk and assume they are... they are coming from a point of view that God doesn't/can't make mistakes.
Therefore there has to be a reason for this 'abomination'. (their opinion) They are going to claim some sort of trauma or mental illness brought on by an outside source.

I work with some very twisted religious folk and this is their backdoor way of blaming all the 'deviant' lifestyles they detest. Its not natural or genetic, or maybe even chosen in their opinion, but it definitely has a 'cause'.

I found that once your two or three comments in you have to stop and ask them to Define evidence and if they are agreeable to it.
You can't change a mind that is already closed.
If they're going to tell you that they're going to believe or that their opinions are based on faith then that's the end of the conversation

@Omen6Actual Check this out. We were always wrong to call it an illness.

Confirmation bias is strong stuff, difficult to over come for most and impossible for some.
