My 16 year old called me at 11:30 because he locked his keys in his car. I went, brought him a spare and he followed me home. As I pulled in I saw a very flattened bunny in the road, still fresh enough to be from earlier today, I'd imagine. My son and i stood around it, talking about how sad it was and I said I'd clean it in the morning if it was still there; he said he'd help. I then walk over to our mailbox, about 8 feet away, and on the ground, splayed out, is a baby bunny. I thought it was dead and went to touch it but it was alive. It was ice cold and barely moving. He was in my hand for about an hour; he finally warmed up about a half an hour after holding him. I put him in a box with one of my old flannel baby blankets. I'll see how he is in the morning...
UPDATE: It was so tiny ❤ I tried to give it some water and something to eat (per wildlife internet site) but he didn't make it. He literally died in my hand, I saw it happen. Right before it happened his whole body stiffened up. Poor thing... it went through a lot. I love the wild bunnies that come graze in our yard ❤❤❤
It was a touching and sad ending , you did what you, could, even death of a wild animal is sad , im glad you shared this tho
Thanks for trying to save and comfort it. When we were kids my brother brought home baby bunnies. Of course we hid them from mom & dad. I found a doll baby bottle and we were able to feed them. After they opened their eyes he put them in with the guinea pig and while parents were working in the yard my mom noticed them. Brother got yelled at then he yelled at me for ratting him out (I didn’t). Needless to say he was forced to get rid of them. Found a friend to take them but they didn’t survive.
Oh no , poor little thing, well at least it felt some compassion before it died. Sad.
@pepperjones I have a tough exterior, but even if Im driving to work and I pass roadkill , a fox or badger for example, I get upset.
Awww that is so sweet of you My son and I watched a hawk drop a baby squirrel. We picked it up in a blanket and rushed it to the vet. It was bleeding from its tiny nose. The vet said they help wild animals for free. The entire car ride my son(12) was gently petting it as it moaned. He died as soon as we left the vet ?
Thanks for doing all you could do to help the little guy. I feel your pain...
We have cottontail bunnies that live underneath the deck in our backyard. A few years ago one of the neighbor cats hopped the fence and mauled a baby bunny. My daughter was maybe only 5 or 6 at the time and was the one who found it barely alive. We tried calling animal control but they said there was nothing they could do. We drove all over the place to find a vet that was even open (it was a Sunday evening). They basically told us they could take the bunny and just euthanize it. We ended up just taking it home where we tried to comfort it as best we could but the experts were right and it didn't last the night. My daughter and I were both in tears as we dug a little grave in the yard and made a little grave marker out of stones and sticks
Oh wow! How sad... Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do though
We have possum that live under our deck too (I feel like Snow White in the woods with all the different animals). One day our little chihuahua/terrier mix got a hold of a baby possum. I had to chase her all over the yard with a wiffle ball bat in order to get her to finally drop the baby possum. We brought the dog inside to clean her up and make sure she was ok. By the time we went back out the baby possum that I thought was long dead was gone. It had been playing possum the whole time in order to get away
Thank you for trying. We have them around my place too, except we are rural enough to have coyotes, hawks, owls, and eagles, wounded bunnies don't last long around here.
A very sweet and humane gesture but it's nature and the reason that a rose also has thorns. I commend your maternal instincts.
@pepperjones I have bottle fed 6 kittens and 3 puppies in life and totally understand and the hardest thing to learn is that we can't save them all. No matter how hard I cried.
at least it died being comforted by a human instead of being killed by a human.
wow that thing is tiny. cute.
@pepperjones aww shuck. You tried. Poor things (yes you both)
This is sad and happy at the same time. You have hit me right in the feels.
@pepperjones :’(
Aw, how cute and sweet.
@pepperjones I'm sorry Pepper, you tried it just wasn't meant to be.
You just made my week. And it's only Wednesday. Keep this shit up. Really.
@pepperjones awww... I'm so sorry!
