Perhaps my comment will be silly. Can you just put a child in the passenger seat in front of the car?
It's not that people don't value their children..it's a problem remembering them when people change their memorized routines.
Maybe you don't always take your child shopping with you, so there's no established habit, but with the cellphone, people likely check on it constantly without thinking, so putting the cell phone in the back with the child is a GOOD idea, since it forces the person to think about what they're doing.
A child died in Montreal under those circumstances just this past week.

what a horrible death and how guilty would you feel as a parent if it actually happened to you. I understand the word valuable in the post is stupid but whatever mechanism that can prevent this is something good in my book.
Maybe some parents shouldn't be parents but they are and their children are not to blame . Probably the best thing would be a sensor in the car seat interfaced into the cars alarm system it happens way too often in the states .
@Besalbub Our kids are adults now but I remember working 60-80 hr weeks, my wife the same. The hub hub of parenting, trying to get enough sleep, getting sick and being forgetful. My phone is not more valuable than my kids but being a zombie, I sure was. My wife and I have spoken about what we would have done if this would've happen and my answer was to kill myself without hesitation. I could not live with myself if I caused something like this. So that said, if this trivial trick, for whatever reason, can prevent a kid from cooking or freezing to death in a car, I'm for it. I think it could save many lives at once be it deserving parents or not.
