Does anyone else get strong religious 'feelings' when entering churches/mosques? Avowed atheist here, after rejecting christian upbringing, but it seems like a primeval part of my brain still holds onto religiosity in some way - secretly hoping some kind of revelation will come along one day and sweep away the doubt, confusion and anxiety of a nogod existence.
Thank you for all the feedback. A double blind(fold) test for religious experiences in various types of building could be the solution. Can understand how medieval peasants got so overawed in such places.
Never having actually belonged to a religion churches don‘t hold any memories for me. I do like visiting churches and cathedrals when on my travels in foreign countries but would’t go visiting any when I’m at home unless it’s a wedding or a funeral. When I visited Malaysia I tried to go inside a pretty impressive mosque with my husband but they wanted me to go in through a separate door so we didn’t bother. Women are second class citizens in Muslim eyes. I’m sure you will get over your strong religious feeling if you just say to yourself, this is just a building which was man made just like the religion it represents.
We've experienced the same when visiting some (not all) mosques. The reason given was that separating the sexes helps both to concentrate on their prayers, instead of checking each other out..
Have a friend lead you into a church, or whatever, with your eyes closed. And see if you have the same reaction.
Good idea, will try a double blind trial sometime.
For me this is complicated as I appreciate art and architecture I acknowledge that some Churches can be a Marvel to look at. I can appreciate at the church helps people and that the people can be kind the music can be inspiring structure of a church the building is beautiful. But the foundation that this was all built on somehow spoils it all. This was all built on lies and Miss guidance.
I think a lot of it was myths rather than cold lies: the misty realm of spirit worlds mixing with the visible one, which most of humanity has believed in for so long.
I can appreciate the beauty of many churches, synagogues, temples, cathedrals, etc. But the 1st thought that comes to mind -- wouldn't the money for this be better spent on building renewable infrastructures and helping feed the poor?
True, although same could be said for huge secular expenditures on sport, marketing, military etc. At least churches provided some sort of social safety net before the modern welfare state.
@Jamienogod True -- but these other organizations do not put forth helping others as part of their mission statement.
No, I don't. Sometimes the art, architecture, even the music is awe-inspiring, but that's just me emotions giving me pleasure. Nothing religious in it. And if you're expecting a revelation to show you there is no god, you've got more latent religious problems than you think!
That wasn't what I meant, a 'revelation' would reveal there is a divine realm after all..
@Jamienogod I think you're on the wrong site. X
I feel in awe of the length people will go through to create beauty. How they manipulate materials, make plans, and construct these buildings, down to the last detail is astounding. I don't feel god, I feel humbled by us.
Humans are amazing.
