I like southern comfort. Is it whiskey? What does everyone else think? I like it wit cranberry Juice on rocks-Scarlett O'Hara. For sweet drink-Hawaiin punch just add amaretto and o. j. to your Scarlett drink. Enjoy!

I do not get to indulge in single-malt enough to make an intelligent comment, however I've never been disappointed by a good Rye Whiskey. Unfortunately, the popularity of Bourbon seams to have crowded the market and made other whiskeys under represented and unnecessarily expensive, including Rye.

Oh! Forgot to say: The best I've EVER tasted is Springbank. I think what I bought was a 18 year old. Rare and expensive.

If it's spelled "whiskey" it's a blend, whereas "whisky" is single malt. The older the better. Glenlivet is my go-to whisky, it's very tasty and not peaty. Hard core whisky drinkers like the flavor and aroma of peat because their taste buds are dulled... too much hard alcohol is hard on your body in many different ways, that being one of them. A very clean, crisp one is Glenfiddich, but it's almost "clinical" in its non-flavor.

Some trivia: I don't know if it's the same nowadays, but about 17 years ago when I was in Scotland there was a glut of whisky on the world market. Manufacturers would shut down for weeks or months at a time, and all the same workers would then be employed by some other distillery just down the road...

I am a scotch drinker. I am going to share my limited knowledge here, but if you don't like scotch, you can skip it all. I found a decent blend I like, so I don't explore the blends too much, but I do explore single malts from time to time. Also, I try all scotches first neat, then with about 3 drops of water, but I prefer scotches that taste better neat and drinking one slowly over the course of an hour is my favorite thing to do. Water is used to reduce the alcohol content and better distribute the esters that contribute to the flavor, so it can change the flavor dramatically, and therefore I avoid ice.

"Pinch" is my "house scotch" of choice. It's a blended whiskey, so the flavor from bottle to bottle is incredibly consistent and well rounded, so it is a good choice for just a generic drink. Johnny Walker is a decent drink for the same reason, but I will never buy the Blue, because it is priced like a single malt, but as a blend, it "rounds out" some of the distinct flavors. Johnny Green and Gold are amazingly good drinks, Red is garbage and Black is very close to pinch on the flavor profile.

Single Malts vary much more and I save them for celebrations. The single best thing I've ever had, and I've only splurged on 2 bottles over the 5 years, since I discovered it, is "Tormore 24" which is a 24 year old single malt from the Speyside region. It's a $200 bottle, and rare to find. I actually stumbled on a Tormore 26, which I will be sharing with my uncle at his daughter's wedding. She's 26 and is the reason I spent most of my life wanting kids and my uncle used to sip a scotch after work and that smell and the conversations we used to have are the reason I drink scotch.

I feel like the "highland" and "lowland" scotches taste too clean for me and the "islay" one's I've tried are just a little too peat-y for me. The "speyside" area seems to be a good balance of flavors for me, but most of my friends prefer highlands.

I also marvel at the way the flavors of chocolate and steak change and change the taste of my scotch. It's fun experiencing those things like wine people do, but I don't appreciate wine like that.

Anyone try that new Jack Daniels honey whiskey? Strange stuff.

Well, moderation would be good, and sip instead of doing shots to make it more pleasurable.
Here, we can buy single serve, like airline bottles.
I think, awhile back, that's all they sold in S.C.
Also, you can get a lot of good info online.
Every once on awhile. Someone will have a tasting where they pair food and different types of whiskey, or whisky as is the proper spelling for scotch.

If you have friends that are interested, you can have get togethers and do that yourself.

My suggestion is prior to whiskey consumption, make sure your toilet and surrounding are clean. Nothing worse than waking up realizing you've been hugging a nasty toilet for who knows how long!

Or you can stop drinking alcohol. After all it's your "resolution"
