I’m in recovery and there is a need to establish a higher power. This, of course, was based on the monotheistic Judeo-Christian concept of god. I grew up Christian and knew that wasn’t for me so I checked out Buddhism. Since Buddhism is non-theistic it agreed with my stance on the world. I have been attending gatherings with those in the Baha’i faith and the believe everyone’s path to god is equally beneficial and that science can only prove god. I am down with that. Desperation for a solution to my addiction set me out on this path but now I see how it enriches a lot of people’s lives. There isn’t any animosity towards religious people present in my life now. I realized that we all have our own perceptions of the same concept.
The higher power is your inner self. It has always been there. It can be channeled. We spend so much time in our minds we don’t listen to our guts or hearts.
Tune in to your inner self. It will ground you and remind you that you have already done the hard part and can carry on minute by minute and hour by hour until they become days weeks and years. Do what you have to do to get well. My mum died two days ago. I won’t lie, being a hard boiled atheist makes it harder to overcome, but I will, and so will you. Knowing that your higher power is inside doesn’t make you a climate change denying evangelical! You haven’t lost your marbles!
Thank you for sharing your insight!
No animosity toward religion here but no unearned respect or deference either.
I wonder what the Baha'i adherents do when science fails to "prove god". Pretend that it will or does, I suppose. Or maybe they take the evangelical path and style science as a giant conspiracy theory against the holy word of god.
But the real problem with that idea is that the standard-issue interventionist supernatural god is not falsifiable to begin with and so science inherently can neither prove NOR disprove it.

Higher power is you! You hear yourself praying and its a warm feeling that someone is looking after your well being. You can use your sanity as a higher power thats looking for enlightenment. Thats meditation... its the God in you that keeps you from stepping out in front of a car. You ever heard the saying....im going to ask myself?
Good luck, addictions are hard to beat. Try this approach: You are the higher power. Not arrogant, just understand that ultimately, everything you do is largely controllable inside your own head.
The problem with that is that it's supposed to be a higher power, something greater than ourselves. On can not be greater than themselves.
@Bodibrown Be your own higher power. It's the only one that will work.

Sending encouragement your way, Xierxie, on your road to recovery. There are many wonderful religious people who truly care about helping people hurting from addiction or loss. A book that helped me realize the many similarities between religions of the world and where they originated from was "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell.
