This is very similar to a question I posed several weeks ago, but it's such an interesting topic, that I'd like to resurrect it. What's the craziest thing you were ever told by a religious leader---be it priest, rabbi, nun, monk, etc.? A Catholic priest once told me that if I resisted a temptation that Satan presented me, Beelzibub would soon return with other demons in tow to tempt me yet again. Then if I resisted the demonic group's efforts, The Dark One would return once more with ever more demons . . . Well, you get the picture. It was never clear to me at what point Satan would accept defeat and leave me alone. This was the same priest, by the way, who advised me and my adolescent friends that it was a grievous sin to wake up in the midst of a wet dream and "assist" with its progress. The funny part about this is that, instead of "assisting", the priest advised us to say a short prayer---in Catholic speak called, of all things, "an ejaculation"---then roll over and go back to sleep. This stuff is so crazy, you just can't make it up!

Thankfully , being a lifelong atheist i havent met anyone like this at all. I have had people say I will pray for you and in my mind I think 'yes - if prayer worked we might have had world peace by now - like thats going to solve everything!

Strangely I can see the point in something like prayer /meditation/anything mind calming

A guy recently told me that he KNOWS God performs miracles because he didn't just see a blind man get healed & was able to then see...he saw him grow eyeballs. For real.
This is sad AF but whatever...sure made me feel better about myself.

  • That I should pray to a God I don't believe in to strengthen a non-existent faith I don't even want..

  • That I can be kind and loving and generous (all vigorously affirmed by this person, no less), but I'm still not getting into heaven if I don't believe...

  • God is in charge of everything, has it all planned out, has total power and control... Yet "the devil" has control of this "fallen world", and causes to happen all kinds of things that God doesn't want...

  • God doesn't want me to think so much...

I can't even.

I used to be into yoga. A zealot approached me and informed me that yoga was one of the many paths to Satan. He even provided an answer to my incredulous "HOW?" He answered that it can change the way you eat and what you choose to believe. What a loon!

Well, he wasn't a religious leader, he's a real good friend. He is very religious, but not pushy. Actually he is one of the most thoughtful and caring people I know. He's a millionare, and yet he spends (like I do0 volunteering at a homeless shelter. He knows that I am an Atheist.

Like I said, he never pushes his beliefs on any one, but he has told me that it really saddens him that he won't get to be with me in heaven.
