The Chinese are in expansionist mood. Today the Chinese Navy and the US Navy had a confrontation in the South China Sea over the new islands that China is constructing. I am quite interested in this for personal reasons. This construction is taking place at a collection of what formerly were a collection of reefs and sandbars, and a notorious place for shipwrecks, called the Spratleys. I know of this because my late husband’s great grandfather was the master of a ship called the Tubelcain which foundered there and master and all hands went down with the ship. My husband’s grandfather was born posthumously as his grandmother had been on the voyage with her husband, but when she realised she was pregnant she was put ashore in Cape Town. If she had gone on she would also have drowned.

China's growth and continued prosperity is dependent upon the Western markets. Every time any of us buys something "Made in China" we're passively supporting their rise to dominance. I must confess I recently bought a new Huawei phone, though I didn't realise it was of Chinese origin at the time.

The most worrying aspect of the Chinese economic machine is that they have almost total control of the supply of some of the more important rare earth metals.

Personally, I quite like the Chinese people. There is much in their culture that is worthy of respect.

Yes they are an ancient and clever race, and very hard workers. It is their having a monopoly of the worlds mineral resources that worries me most.

They arent my favorite . I try to avoid buying anything made there
