I'm browsing through online dating profiles and see a lot of people who want to make sure they find someone with the same faith. I want to share a story with you that tells me how much faith is bad for a relationship if you put God as number 1. I met this couple through my brother, and, as it is with deeply religious people they became little brainwashed baby making machines. Believe me, (no pun intended) when I say I come from a Catholic family and I understand that the brainwashed baby business is good. What troubled me was near the birth of their third child. See, there was an upcoming mission in Africa scheduled around the same time as the due date. He believed it was "God's will" for him to be in Africa, meaning he not only was going to intentionally miss the birth of his child, but leave the mother with the two other under age 5 children as well.

Unfortunately for my personal desires but fortunately due to circumstances, my ex-wife and I never had a child. However, if she was expecting, and for some twist of fate we were religious, it would take a monumental event to keep me from being there for the birth of my (hypothetical) child.

Is "God's will" for you to be half way around the planet to prevent the people there from getting what they need and give them what they don't, or would your dedication to your family supercede the need to give out Bibles when they should be getting condoms?

I was one of those brainwashed Catholic baby making machines. I completely agree with your point.

I have nephews who are good Christian "baby making machines" too. It seems to me all of them could use condoms as well !

God's will sucks.

Never being a Christian I don't get it.

It would be nice to have a Pardner with similar views about religion but in my case pretty much impossible as my wife and I who have been married for over 42 year have agreed not to discuss religion as she retains hers while I have rejected it. Maybe not the best scenario but one that works never the less.

Very well said, LOL! Religion is man-made, so of course men make it so they can run off and play, leaving the child rearing work to their subservient, marginalized wives.

That said, the wives are cooperating, so participating in their enslavement.

Well, seeing as I don't think god is a thing, my view is that when someone says "God's will" and then they can do whatever they like then it is a get out of jail free card. In this case I don't know if he is wanting to just get away or if he feels like he is needed for a grand purpose, one makes him kinda an ass, the other is just an issue of priorities.
Most people here will agree that faith on the whole is not something that does more good than harm. I would agree that marrying someone with a strong faith as an atheist is a bad idea, my wife and I were both christian and now I am not. We are still together but it is tense sometimes, more-so when it comes to our children and what to teach them.

I understand your problem as my wife still retains her Christain religion whereas I have rejected mine. Thankfully she is not a fanatical Christain which makes it a little more bearable. Unfortunately I allowed my wife to raise our 2 children in the Christain religion and now they both reject my atheism but they are not fanatical either so it’s bearable. Maybe someday my grandchildren will see the light.

@Trajan61 My insistence is on being able to think critically. It is annoying enough to have to deal with people who are convinced they are right with no reasonable process to support the ideas they spout. I dread having my kids be so frustrating.

@ThisGuy There’s no reasoning with the religous idiots. Sometimes it’s best just to accept the status quo and do the best you can. Here in Western Ok I’m outnumbered badly as there are very few open atheist here, maybe less than 1% of the population.
