One interesting thing I have noticed out of all my years in a traveling sales position. I often meet new people and I ask about them. Their family, their interests, their hometown. Even here on agnostic.com.
The really interesting observation is that the vast majority , 70 , 80 maybe even 90% will talk forever about themselves. Answer any question . Find you charming. But 90 % never ask one question about you. It is a huge sad statement on us society.

actually snarled or snapped at me. I said
man I'm wasting my energy
Yet there was a perfectly beautiful return
smile & greeting_which motivated me some
what.i still am optimistic about folks(don't
trust anyone over 30yrs-was a montra in
the 60's)**now the art of conversation seems a distant activity,especially if
there's a difference between the 2 people
or there's an audience (i understand
that does matter)... Happiness/Meanness
i heard is slightly contagious;:;&i
refuse to entertain Meanness

Thanks bbjong . Not many discussed it because.....
@Bigwavedave when a discussion happens
in public-people use filters or clam up
altogether....This also works in reverse
ie. the bully will pick the most humiliating
time to ridicule someone.
Sometimes it's the setting; and not
the message or messenger.
Two things come to mind...
Firstly people in general like to talk about themselves..with obvious exceptions...
Secondly curiosity is a natural marker for intelligence...
Clearly the nuns didn't stimey your inate curiosity...

No James they found it a bit off putting in catechism though.
Lol...I started off with the nuns..and was transferred to the even more hard-core Christian Brothers..who showed me the error of my ways..?
I will answer their questions and follow up with "and what about you?". I'm naturally curious about people and would rather listen to their stories than talk about me.

@Bigwavedave Yeah, my dad was a big influence in my life...still is but in a different way now. He's got dementia and is not the same person. He'll ask the same question 50 times and I give him a different answer each time. My mom asked why I did that and I told her because he won't ever remember the answer so I spice it up each time. Are you parents still around??
I suspect you make people feel comfortable answering questions about themselves - and having done that - kinda wait to see if you offer up some personal info about yourself. Maybe they just don't want to come off looking like they're nosey, you know? Waiting to see what you're comfortable sharing about yourself....?????

I used to think that. I don't anymore.
Not surprising at all. In the US, asking personal questions can be dangerous. Many people don't like it..I know I sure don't and usually dodge the personal quesions by changing the subject.
I had to learn to allow it here in Thailand where it's much safer, but even here, it's rare that anyone actually asks a personal question-they mostly mind their own business..one of the things I like about the Thai.

@BBJong Yup. I always said , "Why do you ask?" Then I'd change the subject, feeling uncomfortable.
