It's a force for peace or at least stability, if the society at large accepts its truth claims and does not question them. But the minute you dissent in even the most mild way, there will be no peace for you.

Of course on the other hand even if you assent, you might be sexually molested, or burned at the stake for being a witch. So there's that.

Nothing has been a force for peace, at least not of any significance. I believe that on balance religion has been a malign force but with some qualification. The message of peace that some religions say they promote has been accompanied by ruthless pursuit of that peace which runs counter to it. Contradictory is how I would describe their messages.

The majority of facts don’t get recorded in history. The theory that religion does not contribute in any way, at any level, to peace does not align with the facts either.
